Trade Minister Hon.Amos Kimunya stresses a point during Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry steering committe

Trade minister Hon. Amos Kimunya said he would reinstate KNCCI’S authority to issue the certificates of origin once thechamber completed reforms and amended its constitution to enhance its image. He said that the ministry of trade recognizes the urgent need to revitalize the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry to fully take its  rightful place in discharging its important responsibilities…including the mandatory issuing of Certificates of Origin.

He was speaking in his office during a press conference to announce the commencement of revitalization of Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The Certificate of Origin confirms where export goods were made and their trade value. The origins of goods influence taxation depending on bilateral trade agreements between trading states. The lobby has been counting losses in the upwards of sh4 million annually resulting from the withdrawal of the licenses.

The chamber is waiting for funds from donors to complete reforms like rewriting its constitution and revitalize the organization to take back its responsibilities. The Ministry of Trade says it will finance the reform process of the Chamber from funds allocated under the Private Sector Development Strategy of the ministry. The issuance of the certificates of origin is entrenched in the International Chamber of Commerce and Industry Geneva convention.
