Kenya and Egypt Deepen Bilateral Relations ahead of the Joint Trade Committee Meeting
Kenya and Egypt have a significant trade relationship with trade between the two nations totaling to $567 million in 2024.Egypt is the second largest importer of Kenyan tea while Kenya’s strategic position makes it an attractive partner to Egypt, a key player in regional trade.
The Economic and Trade Counsellor and Head of Economic and Trade Bureau at the Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt in Nairobi Amr Elbakry, today called on the Principal Secretary for Trade Regina Ombam in her office at Telposta towers.
The visit aimed at enhancing the economic ties between the two countries by exploring areas of mutual cooperation including technological exchange, agriculture, energy, investment, freight and logistics.
PS Ombam noted that the longstanding trade partnership between Kenya and Egypt aligns with regional integration efforts under AfCFTA and COMESA and underscored the need to further deepen the economic ties to spur economic growth within the region amidst the shifting global trends.
Elbakry highlighted Egypt’s ongoing collaborating with Kenya in infrastructure development especially in the energy sector and expressed Egypt’s desire and willingness to further strengthen the partnership in agricultural innovation and value addition.
He also noted Kenya's export potential in coffee, tea, cut flowers and avocados saying Kenya can leverage on Egypt’s technological expertise to expand exports especially for meat products and meet the rising market demand.
The two parties also discussed preparations for the upcoming Joint Trade Committee (JTC) to be held in September which is expected to unlock new avenues for cooperation and trade facilitation.
